Kids of three or four years of age jumped up and down as they watched some of their favourite celebrities on stage. They were celebrating, with playback singer G Venugopal and his fans, the first anniversary of their community 'Sasneham'.
Venugopal's fans formed Sasneham, an Orkut community, a year ago. Today, to celebrate its first anniversary, the group brought to the RCC, veteran poet Sugatha Kumari, magician Gopinath Muthukad and the singer himself.
“I came here to pray with all of you for these little kids. What Venu and his fans are doing to cheer them up with music, gives them a relief from the pain and tension,” said Sugatha Kumari.
Sasneham has been organising events for the children at the paediatric ward in RCC on Saturdays, with the help of Dr. Kusuma Kumari, Chief Paediatrician, RCC. With music and other events, they try to bring some fun to the children's lives.
An emotional Venugopal talked about his first experience of visiting the RCC. “When I visited the pediatric ward, I saw children whose eyes shone brightly, but who did not have hair. Suddenly, I felt someone tugging at my jubba from behind. I saw a small girl. She said, 'Maama (uncle) I see your songs on TV. I like them very much,' ” he said.
He added: “There may be many of you who go to temples. I want to tell those people to also come and see the children here. It makes us forget the 'we' in us. For once we forget about ourselves. When I shared this experience with these friends in Orkut, they came up with the plan to spend some time with the kids every Saturday. Physical presence is very important to these kids. One should come here and be present for them.”
Gopinath Muthukad told them a story by Tagore. “We get light from the sun. So the sun was worried about setting because it thought 'who will give light when I am gone?' The stars said they could give some light but they were too far away. And the clouds covered them. The moon said it could borrow sunlight and cast it on earth, but again the clouds covered it. Then a firefly said it has some light in it and it could give that. That is what Venu chettan and all of us are trying to do here: to shed some little light that we could, into your darkness.”
Two kids, Nadia and Shanu, students of Magic Academy, performed magic for the kids. Singers like Sudeep Kumar came on stage to sing for the kids. Children went up on stage to sing 'Annara kanna' and dance to it. It was a sight that spread smiles across one and all in the hall.
Dr. Kusuma Kumari said vote of thanks.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sasneham, a voluntary organisation formed by Orkut fan community members of singer G Venugopal, held its first anniversary celebration at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here on Saturday. `Sasneham', which has around 20,000 online members, carries out weekly musical and painting classes as a part of their charity programmes for child patients in RCC. Inaugurating the function, poet Sugathakumari said the activities of Sasneham were equal to worshiping the almighty. She told the children and parents gathered there to set aside all sufferings since life had both lighter and darker sides. Venugopal recollected his first visit to the RCC years ago and how Sasneham started their service to children in RCC. During his emotional talk, he thanked all members of Sasneham for their voluntary initiatives. Magician Gopinath Muthukad, who was the chief guest, handed over the books donated by Sasneham member Suresh to Chief Paediatrician Dr. P Kusumakumari. Venugopal presented gifts to the chief guests. Muthukad and Magic Academy students Shanu and Nadia performed magic tricks for the child patients. Playback singer Sudeep, Star Singer junior winner Athirakumari sang. Despite their illhealth, the child patients joined the celebrations singing and dancing with the guests. The virtual community, which has started some real life charity for the child cancer patients of the RCC, is planning to move for palliative care for elderly people in future.
